1.3. Notes

  • Amateur radio batteries are dangerous and need to be stored
    • They need to be stored; and tested
  • Capstone students do want to the HAM radio projectslp
    • Peterson is teaching 129A and proposed 3 projects for the EEs in the capstone sequence
    • “Can we propose a new repeater project?”
    • Old engineering notes for the EchoLink
    • UHF antenna repeater needs more details: analog RF repeater; follows the same architecture from the 2m repeater
      • Needs duplexers, power supply, and antenna system
    • 70cm antenna may get less use than a 6m antenna for the area because the reduced amount of HAMs
      • He has the design of the PCB board for the 2m antenna
      • 20m portable design; mobile antenna design; a vertical antenna for Parks on the Air (“CQ POTA”); easy to build
        • 20m seems to be good? based on the FT8 contacts for HF based
      • FT8 is only useful for checking propagation; very low signal to bandwidth to keep the SNR high; otherwise worthless
      • New HAMs love it because they can make a contact but no QSO
      • Using FT8 on 20m; VoIP is better than FT8;
      • 20m is the band to choose for VoIP in day it has short-skip propagation to the East Coast
        • They are government websites; maybe still functioning during the the government shutdown
        • Link in the blogging program that pulls-up propagation sites.
        • They will be useful.
        • 20m and 10m
        • CSCE: Callsign / (something); HAM gatekeeping keeps HF noise to a minimum
        • Junk band frequencies are being used from 50MHz up is used. There is a lot of noisy signals on 2m.
        • Peterson has the repeater notes at home
        • Sarah and Natalie are were building antennas that people were working on
      • Peterson has a lot of animals that mess with his HF antennas; (fat owls and stupid turkey)
        • 2m antenna and helix antenna need surgey: we need satallite antennas
        • Can one demonstrate Satellite station
      • IN 2018/2019, the university reroofed the BE building; they took down the antennas so they need be placed up there by
      • Drupal site years ago, and then used WordPress; MK put up a wordpress site
      • Announcement are for community and not the club.
      • Logging system
      • One can use a server and host a club website;
      • Club have remote control of HF antennas and interference
      • Peterson can get hard IP addresses for Echolink and other server
        • strict about what security goes on there;
      • Amateur Radio Club and Peterson are stakeholders for the capstone project
        • Backup battery project is not sufficiently complex for the capstone project
        • iCOM radios are FRS radios; they do not require a license to operate on the UHF frequencies
          • radios are PMR446; SDR; Radio-mode helix for the antenna; check RT systems for the software
            • IC4O2F iCOM radio
          • Have to look into the FCC rules because the radios are UK and have to be checked
        • Today picking up motorola radios
        • Repeater in the BELs basement; Peterson will go to down and ask about it; making it narrow band can be used in the room
        • All officers except KO6HNW and KO6HNH stayed behind in BE308s
        • Meeting adjourned with officers helping move old items from BELs in the BE308 room.
